Thiamine is used to treat beriberi (tingling and numbness in feet and hands, muscle loss, and poor reflexes caused by a lack of thiamine in the diet) and to treat and prevent Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome (tingling and numbness in hands and feet, memory loss, confusion caused by a lack of thiamine in the diet).

Thiamine (vitamin B1) is found in many foods and is used to treat low thiamine, beriberi, certain nerve diseases, and Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome (WKS). Thiamine is required by our bodies to properly use carbohydrates. It also helps maintain proper nerve function.

Taking thiamine will start increasing your body’s levels of vitamin B1 within a few hours. However, if you’re taking it to treat vitamin B1 deficiency, it may take a few weeks before you start to feel better. It’s important to keep taking your thiamine for as long as the doctor tells you to.

Vitamin B1 helps prevent complications in the:
nervous system.
brain.
muscles.
heart.
stomach.
intestines.

But research suggests vitamin B1 also may offer these six health benefits:
Helps treat certain causes of heart failure. …
Keeps your nervous system healthy. …
May prevent brain disease. …
Strengthens your immune system. …
Protects your peepers. …
May improve blood sugar management.

Thiamine may not be suitable for some people. To make sure it’s safe for you, tell your doctor before starting to take thiamine if you: have ever had an allergic reaction to thiamine or any other medicine. are due to have any blood tests or scans – thiamine can affect the results of certain tests.
